Obituary for Gary Leon Reis

Gary Leon Reis, 67, passed away peacefully at home under the care of Aspirus Hospice Comfort Care on March 6, 2019 after a brief battle with cancer. Gary was born January 19th, 1952 in Chicago, IL, the son of Leon and Rosemary (Chmielewski) Reis.

Gary lived and loved life to the fullest. He maintained lifelong friendships and his relationships with his brothers, Tom and David, and his sister, Joanne, were amazing. I don’t believe there was ever a more dedicated brother. He met the love of his life, Lynda, in Chicago in 1994. They married and spent 20 years living near Lake Michigan in the city. They met as members of a Lincoln Park running club and carried their love of outdoor activities with them throughout their marriage. They enjoyed bicycling on the lakeshore and hiking the Pyrenees, Arizona and Oregon with dear friends.

Gary loved his life with Lynda, he especially loved reminiscing about their many dances together. When they decided to retire, they chose Wausau to be closer to family and friends. Gary loved it here. Gary was born and raised in the city and was thrilled to have a yard to care for and a workshop to tinker in. He loved finding projects (broken things that still had a chance) and trying to bring them back to their former glory. Gary was a very special uncle to all of his nieces and nephews and all of their kids too! He had a natural way of being the fun uncle to everyone.

He will be dearly missed by them all. Gary’s marriage to Lynda meant an instant new family. Gary quickly became a great Dad and then Grandpa to her kids and grandkids. He loved us all and made time to do special things with each of us. His presence in our lives is immeasurable. Some of his greatest times were spent at the Stone Lake cottage in Indiana with his best friends, “The Weasels”. He later shared his love of the cottage and lake with Lynda and her family.

Gary loved music of all genres to his core. He enjoyed seeing live music with friends and family as much as at home on the stereo. He always loved being on the water, especially sailing. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Rosemary Reis and his brothers Tom and Leo Reis.

He is survived by his wife, Lynda, Wausau. His brother David Reis, Wausau. His sister, Joanne (Chris) Gasiorek and their children, Brooklyn, Charlotte and Ben, Chicago. Stepsons, John (Lindsey) Stifler and their children, Cohen and Marlowe, Dallas. Matthew (Jayme) Stifler and their children, Emmett, Miles, Clara and Henry, Wausau.

A visitation will be held at Community Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1806 Weston Avenue, Schofield, WI on Friday March 15th, 2019 at 12:00pm followed by a service at 1:00pm.
