Daniel Oliver Olson, 72 years young, passed with a whisper of breath on May 18th, 2019, his daughter Corissa telling him she LOVED him and thanking him for being the BEST DADDY and PAPA EVER merely seconds before.
With her voice of assurance, Dan let go of his earthly concerns and became at peace with his Creator, Lord and Savior.
Daniel Oliver Olson was born September 29th, 1946, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the sixth of nine children to Vernon Martin and Beatrice Elizabeth (Lyons) Olson.
Dan attended school in Briarton and Wausau, WI, graduating from Wausau East in 1965. Dan struggled with ADD in all of his formative schooling. It was only as an older adult that he was finally diagnosed and so many answers to so many questions finally came to light.
But the what ifs no longer mattered as Dan had already persevered past his learning disability, joined the army, and eventually worked at Kraft Foods for over 33 years.
Dan joined the armed forces right after graduation proudly following in the footsteps of his brothers Allen, Warren, Wayne, Gregory, as well as his father Vernon and brother-in-law Don Londerville.
Dan served in the Regular Army from 25 June 1965 through 24 June 1969. He served in the inactive reserve until 24 June 1971. After basic training, he completed his education for Morse Intcp 05H20 in Fort Devens, Massachusetts. Fort Devens was a hop, skip and a jump from where his brother Warren and family resided in Somerville near Boston. This is when Dan fell in love with the Bean Town. Years later, Dan made purposeful trips back with his wife Deb.
After graduating from Fort Devens, Dan was sent to Army Security Agency duty stations in Vietnam, Taiwan and Oakland California. As a High Speed Morse Intercept Operator or Diddy Bopper, he transcribed encrypted enemy Morse code.
Dan was able to match a transmission with a radio unit, and if the enemy moved, he could still locate that particular radio. His typical day was spent intercepting intelligence at a radio with headphones on his head.
Some of his off hours, after being a spy, were spent gaining a fondness for beer, sleeping in air-conditioned barracks, and having military escorts for a day at the beach.
One of Dan's favorite memories was being on R&R to meet up with his brother Wayne in Vietnam. Wayne was delayed and when Dan was leaving Saigon, both saw each other as their rickshaws passed in opposite directions. Dan jumped out and with hug to Wayne and a wave bye to the driver, Dan extended his R & R with an "I couldn't catch a plane" story.
Dan carried survivor guilt because he had it good in Vietnam, and did not see live action. He was BOOTS ON THE GROUND, and as such he is documented as being exposed to AGENT ORANGE.
As Corissa said, Dad survived his enlistment, but he didn't survive Vietnam, passing away from an Agent Orange presumptive disease, Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.
Dan was diagnosed with cancer on December 22, 2018 and passed away nearly five months later. He was healthy, 5 days a week at the gym, and didn't even qualify for a lung cancer screening. He did get bronchitis a lot, but even that was medically explained away and perhaps not addressed properly. Dan had no symptoms until it metastasized in his brain and caused a fall with traumatic injury.
After his honorable discharge from the army, he headed back to Warren's adopted home town and worked as a dispatcher. Dan truly enjoyed Boston, being near Warren and Betty and their extended family, but was still a Wisconsinite at his core and needed to be nearer to the heart of the Olson Family.
Dan's employment at Kraft Foods in Wausau was a mismatch career choice, the only good pieces for him were the paycheck, the benefits and a small handful of friends.
Dan took early retirement to preserve his sanity, and worked at the UPS store, part time and came away feeling like family every day.
Dan was a family man, politics be dammed. He loved, sometimes not so wisely, but he loved. While searching for an honest, real life, lasting love, his Dad, Vernon said, "Don't worry, you'll meet a nice widow." And he did!
He met his best friend, wife and traveling cohort, Deborah Osypowski nee Redmann on a blind date in October 1974.
In July, 1975, Dan asked Deb if she'd consider marrying him. She said she'd consider it. So without a real proposal, or a real yes, they were married on September 27, 1975, in St. Anthony's Church, Athens, WI.
In 44 years of marriage (4 months shy), Deb and Dan shared so much love, so much laughter, more than a few tears too, and most importantly raised a lovely daughter, Corissa, together.
He was never prouder than he was as a Daddy, and Papa or more loved. Theirs is an endless relationship, there are no boundaries. It is unexplainable beyond belief. The loss is unfathomable. Only the memories and the photos prove it happened, it was real, he was here and now he's gone, but he's really not, cause he's here-with us in our hearts, still and forever.
Daniel was preceded in death, by his parents, Vernon and Beatrice (Lyons) Olson, brothers, Warren Olson; Allen Olson; and sisters-in law, Betty (Elizabeth Philbrick) Olson and Florence (Hanneman) Olson.
He is still and forever in the hearts of his devoted wife, Deborah, loving daughter Corissa (Douglas) Seefeldt, and his precious grandchildren, Cash Ryan Daniel, Brynnley Ann, Briella Joan and Cooper Douglas.
He will be lovingly remembered by his brothers and sisters, Verneen (Don) Londerville, Wayne Olson, Gregory (Nadeen ) Olson, V. Thomas (Karen) Olson, Toni (Michael) Sanford; and Faye (Dennis) Hardt.
He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Fritz (Frederick) and Germaine Redmann, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A military committal service will be held at the Central Wisconsin Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, M2665 County Rd QQ in King Wisconsin on Friday, June 28th at 1:00-1:30pm. An Open Celebration in his honor will be held "Dan Style" 3:30 pm, at the Seefeldt Residence, 2628 Elmwood Blvd, Wausau.
Dan passed away under the care of Aspirus Hospice and the Mt View Manor. We as a family thank his whole care team, hospice, nurses, cna's, housekeeping , dietary, social worker, and administration whose main focus it was to respect and keep Dan in dignity and comfort and to support his family as our needs fluctuated while we progressed along him on his journey.
Many thanks to Dan's sisters, Faye and Toni for visiting either Deb for hours and Dan for seconds while in Mt View Manor. Donna and Mike, Dan was aware and in tune for you, although your visit was cut short. Kay, your visit was short and ever so sweet. And especially for the timely visits with Brothers Greg, just the day before, and Tom only moments, before Dan passed, even though his last minutes with you may have been nonsensical with multiple brain metastasis, he most assuredly was attuned and heard your prayers and love on his deeper soul level.Tom, thank you for sharing your prayer here.
Heavenly Father,We thank You that at the beginning You spoke into the darkness and created heaven and earth. If all creation responds to Your voice, if the winds move and the mountains shake at Your command, how can we doubt that You are the Creator, the ruler of all?Thank you for the life of my brother Daniel. Please open his eyes, Lord, that he may see Your presence, just like You opened the eyes of Elisha's servant and he saw the hills covered by horses and chariots of heavenly fire. Help my brother to see what l see when l look upon Your face, precious Lord, for You are worthy to be honored." You are the only hope of salvation, Lord Jesus and I pray that Daniel will reach out to you and accept You as his Savior. Amen
And again, Thank you all for supporting each other and following the "Updates", as an unexpected journey unfolded day by day and sometimes moments by moments and tied us all together.
