Milena Alena Kautzer (née Dobrova), of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, at the age of 90. She was a much beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.Milena was born to parents Karel and Marie Dobr on October 7, 1930 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She lived through both the German occupation and the communist regime in her native country. She enjoyed arts and culture, as well as skating, swimming, skiing, and walking. She was also an avid reader and loved to travel. In 1956, she married Albert Prerost at the Town Hall in Prague. She met Al when her only sibling, Karel, who had escaped from the Soviet army, ended up in Chicago and was assisted by the Czech community, including Al's family. Al and Milena became pen pals; he went to Prague in August of 1956, and they married in October. Al brought Milena to the US after they received permission for her to leave the country. After a brief time in Bellevue, Washington, where their first child, Bruce, was born, they settled in Bayfield, WI, where they lived until 1981. Milena worked at the Bayfield Inn, which she owned with Al, was a librarian at Northland College, and harvested fruit at the local orchards and on their farm. All three of their daughters, Joyce, Monica, and Christine, were born in Washburn. To escape the long winters, Al and Milena moved to Foley, Alabama in 1981 and continued to spend summers in Bayfield. Al died in 1986. Milena worked for the Foley Public Library until she retired in 1995. She continued to spend summers in northern Wisconsin, where she met Mathew Kautzer. They married in 1997, and he died in 2012. Milena moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin in 2018 to be closer to family. Milena is survived by her son, Bruce (Teresa); and her daughters, Joyce (Scott) Shoemaker; Monica (Charles) Drum; and Christine (Mark) Williams; eight grandchildren: Stephanie, Luke, Haeli, Kaleb, Nick, Callae, Devan and Jamie; and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Prerost and Mathew Kautzer; her brother, Karel Dobr; her parents, Karel and Marie; and grandson, Brandon Shoemaker. Milena requested that a memorial service not be held. She will be cremated, and her ashes scattered in both Bayfield and Prague.
