It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Claire Packer. Richard was born October 7, 1943, at home on Tomorrow River Road in Amherst Junction, Wisconsin, to Deloyd “Claire” and Evelyn “Lorraine” (Johnson) Packer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Richard married Linda Weldon on January 6, 1961, and they had four children: Pamela (Arthur Nitke), Penny (Dave Granum), Scott (Hazel Christensen), and Lori (Jeff Valence). In addition to his wife of 65 years, Linda, and his three daughters, Richard leaves behind his sisters, Evelyn Lee, Peggy Packer, Jean (Terry Schwirtz), Judy (George Konkol), and Nancy Packer; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was employed by Carl Walker, the Waupaca Foundry, Johnson Feed Mill, and Johnson Towing. He bought the Amherst Super Service Gas Station, which was on the corner of Main and Mill Street in Amherst and ran it with his wife Linda from 1970-1983. He was later employed at Pavelski Enterprises; was the plant manager and propane hauler for Tomorrow Valley Coop and finished his working career at Helbach Farms and Gordon Dale Farms.
Richard enjoyed wood working, tinkering in his workshop, and working on small motors.
He was preceded in death by his son Richard “Scott” Packer; grandson, Joe Carlson; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Dudley; brother Gary Packer; sister Barbara Ogden; his parents Claire and Lorraine Packer; four brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Nelsonville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3061 Oak Street, Nelsonville. Visitation will take place from 9:00 until the time of service at the church. Burial will take place at the Nelsonville Cemetery. John J Buettgen Funeral Home is assisting the family.
