Our History
History
The building at 948 Grand Avenue in Schofield has been standing since 1900. It was built by John F. Ross, a local businessman and one of the more prominent figures in the early community. After the Ross family, the house was occupied by the Winninger Family Novelty Company, a traveling entertainment troupe headed by Franz Winninger. His son Charles went on to a career in Hollywood.
In 1954, Earl Janssen purchased the three story colonial and converted it into a funeral home, moving in with his family. It has been a funeral home ever since.
In 1977, Patrick Hayden, who had worked for Janssen, purchased the business. He expanded it in 1982 by building a second location in Mosinee. Mr. Hayden operated both locations for nearly two decades before retiring in September of 1999, when he sold the business to his employee, funeral director John Buettgen.
John and Sharon have owned and operated the business for nearly 20 years. In 2009 it was renamed John J. Buettgen Funeral Home.
Our Facilities
The Schofield location on Grand Avenue is the original, a three story colonial that has welcomed Central Wisconsin families for over 70 years. The Mosinee location includes a Memorial Chapel suited for services of all sizes. Both locations can host catered luncheons.
Who we are
John and Sharon are not a corporation. They are not a chain. They are two people who have spent nearly 20 years learning the names, the families, and the traditions of this community. Every person who walks through our doors is served by people who live here too.
We are licensed by the State of Wisconsin and offer a full range of funeral, burial, and cremation services across both locations.

Our beautiful Schofield/Wausau facility lends itself to comfortable visitations. We also have our Memorial Chapel for services in our Mosinee Funeral Home.

History
The Schofield house was built in 1900, by a local businessman & philanthropist John F. Ross.
After the Ross family, the famous traveling Winninger Family Novelty Company headed by Franz Winninger occupied the house. His son, Charles Winninger was perhaps the most famous of the family for he went on to do Hollywood movies.
John J. Buettgen Funeral Home has been owned and operated as a funeral home since 1954, when Earl Janssen purchased the three story colonial house and moved in with his family.
In 1977, an employee of Janssen’s, funeral director Patrick Hayden purchased the home and business. The business added a new location when Mr. Hayden built an additional funeral home in a nearby town, Mosinee, in 1982.
Mr. Hayden owned and operated both funeral homes up until his retirement in September of 1999, when his employee, funeral director John Buettgen, purchased the business. In 2009 the funeral home was changed to John J. Buettgen Funeral Home.
