Don't have a spouse or kids to leave this to? You still need a plan — maybe more than most.
If there's no built-in "next of kin" making decisions for you, it doesn't happen automatically. In most states, you can legally name the specific person you trust to carry this out — a partner you're not married to, a sibling, a best friend — regardless of blood relation. It's a simple form. It's the single most useful thing you can do this week.
